(this was posted on my myspace blog...)
hi.
i went on an incredible journey last weekend. well, it actually lasted for 6 days. i went to a little venue they call red rocks in the rocky mountains of colorado. it’s a place us DMB FREAKS have dreamed incessantly of visiting to see our favorite band, and a place we never ever thought we’d actually be gathered together. i mean...it was a total pipe dream. and then somehow, POOF! it came true. i saw the band that has given my life such intense color and life in this venue FOUR nights in a row. and it was more heavenly and blissfully euphoric than i can ever even dream of expressing.
I’ve begun the process of writing reviews of the shows. I’m through the first two on paper, and i won’t be posting them here. they’re for my dmb mailing lists and other blog. so if you’re interested in that bit o’ rambling, let me know and I’ll be sure to forward you a copy.
it was absolute perfection, though. somehow, in true freak fashion, an ideal place to stay was dumped in our laps last minute. a cabin built by a friend’s grandfather with views of the mountains that took my breath away approximately 17 times a day. about 8 miles from the venue.
i have got to be the most fortunate person alive. i always speak of the dear people in my life. but then I’m thrown into a situation where I’m amongst this specific group and my heart swells with such life and my brain is so soothed and my entire being is moving in tune with such an amazingly diverse, wonderful group of people... have i said it enough? this trip was perfection. i am still so overwhelmed with the experience. never in my life have i come close to feeling such an intense communal bond. from arriving at the venue the first night with all the hugs and smiles that were shared for the thousands of us who had dreamt of that moment for so so long, through sharing those shows with that band and realizing they were as far out there as we were, through the intense, needy hugs that sealed each show into my veins for the rest of my life... i only wish everyone in the world could experience what went on.
it was the absolute culmination of the past 7 years. no doubt. loose ends are tied up. of course, i had my loves with me. but i also got to see people I’ve come across during my years of touring who have drifted back out again, yet still left such an imprint on me. i got some closure from a ghost who will never actually leave my heart, but who I’m learning so slowly to live without.
the bonds that have formed through this music are so precious to me. and the music itself...well, it is in fact the soundtrack to my life. they played 55 songs in those 4 nights. and each of them was played with such integrity and zest and passion. my libido will never, EVER ever be the same.
like it needed a boost. hah.
oh, and the fourth night was actually a last minute addition(as in, a week in advance) which served as a hurricane katrina benefit. not only did all ticket proceeds go to the fund, but all workers of the entire venue volunteered their wages, and all merchandise revenue went as well. fuck yes, that’s something to be proud of.
so is the 25 straight hours in the car we endured after the show Monday night to get home in time for all 3 of us to work wed. only i found out when i arrived home at 2 in the morning that my shift had been covered. thank god for that one.
red rocks...oh, red rocks. what a stunningly beautiful place to have staged such a revolution for all involved. I’ve said it ten thousand times...I’ll never ever return from whatever plane it was i reached at some point during the 2nd night. during “don’t drink the water.” i remember it so vividly...
good, good times y’all.
